Is Tequila Keto?

When we first get started out on the keto diet, it can be hard to know where to begin. Sure, it seems easy enough, just no potatoes, rice, or wheat, right?

But what about all of those ambiguous foods and drinks out there? It can take a great deal of research and patience when it comes to figuring out some keto friendly treats.

Fear not, however, because below, we provide a detailed list of some of the best keto-friendly alcoholic beverages out there, including liquors.

For those of you who are wondering whether tequila, along with a whole bunch of other beverages out there are indeed, keto friendly, we’ve got you covered.

Is Tequila Keto Friendly?

So, why don’t we just jump straight in and answer the titular question? Is tequila considered to be keto friendly? The simple answer is, kind of. As we mentioned above, there are a lot of gray areas when it comes to choosing keto friendly foods and beverages.

Some drinks are considered to be neither good nor bad, and should merely be consumed in moderation as part of a ketogenic diet.

It’s also important to pay attention to the format in which you’re consuming tequila, as this will be a big indicator when it comes to carb content.

For example, most people will mix their tequila with fruit juices and syrups, which are most definitely not keto friendly (check out our Teremana Tequila Review for more information). But, if you’re planning on drinking your tequila straight, on the other hand, then you can rest easy, as it contains zero carbs by itself (read our review on 818 tequila).

So, if you stick to plain old tequila, without any sugary additives, you can safely remain in a state of ketosis, and enjoy your beverage without any guilt.

What Other Drinks Are Keto Friendly?

If you’re looking for some other alcoholic beverages you can consume on your next evening out, then we’ve got you covered.

Just because you’re following a ketogenic diet, this doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy many of the same drinks as you did before.

If you’re a big wine lover, for example, then you’ll be pleased to know that these contain very little carbs per glass. However, if you’re choosing a particularly sweet wine, or port, bear in mind that these will have significantly more sugar.

So, when ordering your wine at the bar, the dryer the better. We recommend going for reds such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon. A typical 5 oz glass of one of these wines will only contain around 3.92 carbs, making it incredibly easy to factor into your diet.

If you’re a white wine drinker, the same rule applies, with the dryer the wine meaning less overall carbs. For white wine, we’d recommend varieties such as sauvignon blanc, which contains around 3.90 carbs per 5 oz glass.

In terms of other spirits you can enjoy whilst following a low carb diet, you can safely consume almost all hard liquors. This includes vodka, gin, whiskey, and rum. Each of these contain zero overall carbs.

But, remember, this only applies as long as you’re not mixing them with sugary items.

If you’re planning on celebrating, then you can enjoy some champagne or prosecco guilt free too! A dry champagne will only contain 1 carb per oz, so you don’t need to hold back on the festivities.

Drinks To Avoid When Following A Keto Diet

Now that we’ve covered some alcoholic beverages you can still enjoy whilst following a ketogenic diet, it’s probably time to cover some of those which are best avoided.

There are several different types of drinks that you should stay away from on your next visit to the bar. Some of the most obvious drinks which are an absolute no no include cocktails.

Many of these drinks are loaded with sugar and fruit based juices, which can easily knock you out of ketosis with a mere sip.

When it comes to appropriately following the keto diet, you should also seek to steer clear of beer.

Because beer is made from barley, this ingredient is quickly converted into sugar, which can knock you out of ketosis. On top of this, however, yeast is added into the mix, which can prove fatal to your diet. A mere can of beer has almost 12 grams of carbs.

So, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a lover of IPA, beer, or lager, steer clear of these drinks.

When it comes to mixers, we’d recommend staying away from sodas. Many people will opt to mix their vodka with coke, but this drink is high in sugar, and could potentially ruin your diet. One can of cola, for example, has a total of 39 grams of carbs.

In addition to sodas such as coke, tonic water is also a major culprit when it comes to high carb mixers. Many people believe tonic water to be a low carb option, after all, it has ‘water’ in its name.

But, this simply isn’t the case. A regular glass of tonic water contains approximately 15g of carbs, which is more than half of most people’s carb consumption for the day.

To sum up, tequila is absolutely low carb friendly. This alcoholic beverage contains zero carbs, and can be enjoyed completely guilt free as long as it’s not mixed with other items. Some other low carb spirits include gin, whiskey, vodka, and rum.
