Mississippi Distilleries

If you find yourself in “The Magnolia State” whether for business, pleasure, or simply because it’s your home state, you might be surprised to see that there are very few Mississippi distilleries. However, considering that this is an alcoholic beverage control state, this actually makes a lot of sense. Mississippi was also the last state to abolish Prohibition

As you might imagine, this history and set of laws in Mississippi make for more difficult hoops for spirit producers to jump through. This might seem like a downside at first, but what it means for you is actually pretty intriguing. The amount of beverage control in this state means that, in order to get spirits made and distributed, distillers have to be dedicated and passionate about their craft. Given this, don’t rule Mississippi out of your tour travels just yet.

If you’re flying into the Jackson–Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport, you’ll be right in one of Mississippi’s largest cities: Jackson. Luckily, there is one of the Mississippi distilleries right here in Jackson – Cathead Distillery, where they distill vodka, bourbon, gin, and liqueurs. You’ll also be close to Rich Grain Distilling Co. (bourbon) in Canton, a short thirty-minute drive from Jackson.

If you want to visit the other three Mississippi distilleries, a bit of a drive is going to be involved, though. Traveling two hours and twenty minutes north of Jackson to Taylor will get you to Wonderbird Spirits, where they make field-to-bottle gin.

If you’d rather venture south, traveling southwest towards the Louisiana border will take you to Natchez’s Charboneau Distillery, where they produce rum. Traveling further south towards the ocean will take you to Kiln’s Crittenden Distillery, where they distill whiskey made with local grains.

So, as you can see, there aren’t many Mississippi distilleries yet, but the ones that you will find are well worth the travel. Make sure to stop at historic sites and enjoy the amazing scenery while you’re in the beautiful state of Mississippi.
