West Virginia Distilleries

If you’ve found yourself in “The Mountain State,” you’ll know that this state’s geography is like no other. Intense, rolling hills and tiny mountains cover the northern part of the state, and driving the interstates through the mountains is a sight to behold. However, what does this beautiful state have in store for you – the distillery enthusiast?

You’ll be happy to hear that there are ten West Virginia distilleries in this state, but, being as large as it is, this means that you’re going to be doing some intense driving to see them all. Flying into West Virginia’s largest airport (Yeager Airport in Charleston) will be a humbling experience – this airport only sees about 250,000 enplanements throughout the year. If you are the type of distillery tourist that wants to be as efficient as possible, you’ll only have two West Virginia distilleries at your disposal.

Right in Charleston, you’ll find the first of your West Virginia distilleries – Mountain State Distillery. Here, they distill boutique-style micro-distilled whiskey and moonshine. The owner is intensely dedicated to his craft and this really “shines” through in each bottle – flavored or not – that he fills.

About thirty-six minutes north of Charleston, you’ll find Appalachian Distillery in Ripley. Here, they distill whiskey, bourbon, and moonshine. Appalachian Distillery is unique because they do everything on-site, from mashing to fermenting and distilling to bottling. And, they have ten moonshine flavors to try!

As far as attractions go, West Virginia doesn’t have that much to offer you. However, if you want to spend a few days here and do a bit of driving, you’ll find four distilleries within two hours of Charleston, making them a good day trip for those that don’t mind a short road trip. If you find yourself in this beautiful state, you definitely have some great, exciting options for West Virginia distilleries to enjoy.
