Teremana Tequila Review

Teremana Tequila Review

When it comes to alcohol, there are plenty of options we could look to for a beautiful beverage, and one of the most popular choices is tequila. Of course though, there are many choices of tequila on the market alone.

One tequila on the market now is known as Teremana tequila – also known as the “Celebrity Tequila” due to the famous people that endorse the product. But does this mean it is any good?

Well, we’ve tried and tested this tequila and we’ve written an extensive review. We’ll tell you the basics of this tequila and how we found it in terms of taste, appearance and aroma (see also ‘What Does Tequila Taste Like?‘).

Ready to find out more about this tequila? Then read on!

What Is Teremana Tequila?

Teremana tequila is a brand of tequila which was founded by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The tequila was crafted in a small, mountainous town within the Jalisco Highlands. It is created by slow-roasting the agave using small brick ovens.

After this,  the tequila is then distilled in copper pot stills. As you can already tell, this process is different from many other types of tequila. While this makes the tequila unique, its fame is much more drawn from both its founder and its goals.

Teremana tequila is all about people like family and friends. In fact, the name “Teremana” is derived from a Polynesian word “mana” which means spirit, and the latin word “terra” which means earth.

Putting these words together for the portmanteau of Teremana, the brand literally means “spirit of the earth”, which in itself has a dual meaning of both the literal spirit drink and the metaphorical spirit.

Is Teremana Tequila Any Good?

Before we get into our take on this tequila, we should point out a few things.

There are a few different types of Teremana tequila which are:

  • Blanco
  • Reposado
  • Anejo

We will look into these more closely later in this review, but if we look at the objectivity of this tequila – we can see that, yes, it is good! We can say this by simply looking at the awards this tequila has received.

Teremana tequila has won multiple awards but most notably it won the tequila of the year award 2021, the bartender spirits award 2022 and many gold awards from different judges and competitions.

Teremana Tequila

Let’s look at each of these tequilas and give you our review on them individually.

Blanco

Kicking off with the classic version of the Teremana tequila, we have the Blanco.

Profile

This tequila uses 100% Blue Weber highland agave and is 100% certified as gluten free, which makes it perfect for anybody with specific allergies or dietary requirements. This was quite refreshing to see with a “new kid on the block” alcohol.

It has 0 carbohydrates and only 96 calories per 1.5 ounce serving. Again, this was something we were very pleased to see, as there are so many people who want to enjoy an alcoholic beverage on a diet or calorie restriction. This gives you that freedom.

Created in its unique way of brick oven roasting and copper pot distilling, this tequila gives itself a huge boost on the market – and certainly puts itself out there.

Taste And Aroma

Upon first smelling the tequila, we immediately noted aromas of citrus fruits, agave and of course, alcohol. One of the surprising things with this was the fact that a lot of celebrity alcohol drinks tend to use artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

As a result, the aroma is usually affected and this is something you can pick up right away. Luckily, this is not a problem here.

In terms of its taste, the initial tingle to the palate is warm but then it’s followed by a sweet taste, likely from the agave. Continuing from here, we got notes of green peppers and this provided a very earthy and grounded taste.

What was even better was the aftertaste. So many tequilas linger on your tongue for too long and change to bitterness. However, this tequila continued giving us a slight peppery aftertaste and finally more agave.

Whilst it was not the smoothest drink, the texture was very creamy and it is a perfect tequila to use for cocktails like a margarita

Appearance

Initially, we spot how glamorous the bottle appears. It has a typical bottleneck shape with a shiny, white and silver color. This of course makes perfect sense based on its name of “blanco”, meaning white.

The label, while basic, is designed in such a way that makes you think of mountains and minerals – which is authentic to its origins. We found that to be a very humbling factor.

The alcohol itself has a slight yellow/green tinge to it, as with many types of tequila, so nothing too much to note there.

Reposado

Now we move onto the reposado.

Profile

This particular tequila does not have a great deal of difference to the previous edition in terms of its nutritional content or creation method – however, there is one huge thing that makes it different.

This tequila is aged using an American whiskey barrel. This plays a huge role in its appearance, aroma and taste – which we will look at shortly.

Taste And Aroma

The aroma straight away is noticeable and certainly different from the previous tequila. We picked up hints of vanilla and oak with small notes of almonds. This made it very creamy and fruity.

Of course, this affected its taste which was certainly shared in the same breath. It had a beautiful vanilla and floral taste that lingered on the tongue for quite a long time. Its warmth lasts longer than the blanco version too.

It’s also much sweeter than the blanco, and this definitely makes it more useful for a tequila to drink neat rather than with something else – although this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t mix it with anything (read our post on mixing tequila with soda for more information)!

Appearance

The bottle is pretty much identical to the blanco but the main appearance difference is in the color of the bottle and the color of the tequila. Both of which have a stronger yellow to gold color.

This is likely due to the aging process with the American whiskey barrels which can affect the overall appearance of the liquid. This was something we quite liked as it gave the drink a more enticing appearance.

Anejo

We now move onto anejo, the final edition to the Teremana tequila family.

Profile

In terms of the general profile, the anejo is exactly the same as the reposado, including the aging process. However, this does not mean that the tequila is exactly the same – in fact, it’s far from the same!

Taste And Aroma

Upon first smelling this tequila, you get notes of vanilla like the previous tequila, but then suddenly there’s a change to something resembling butterscotch. This was very pleasing because it has its own identity, which we were very keen to see.

This butterscotch aroma transforms upon tasting to a caramel, sweet flavor. Indeed, this tequila is absolutely gorgeous in terms of its aroma and its taste. There also seemed to be a buttery, vanilla and caramel finish with just a tiny hint of spice and smoky oak.

Appearance

Perhaps the most striking and most obvious change in this tequila’s appearance is the color. It is much darker than the two previous editions in the family, but this sort of works well due to its taste.

Yes, as it has a very caramel/butterscotch flavor and aroma to it, the color helps you get to that conclusion. Once again, the bottle shape and design has not changed – and it is still something you’re proud to have in your drinks’ collection.

Which Teremana Tequila Is The Best?

It really depends on you. If you’re looking for a tequila to use for cocktails or other mixing drinks, then the blanco is the tequila to look at. However, if you’re looking to enjoy tequila neat – then you’d be looking at either of the other two.

For a very sweet flavor, the anejo is definitely the tequila to look at, but if you don’t want it too sweet or too powerful in terms of the alcohol taste – then the middle ground is the reposado.

Is Teremana Tequila Good For Shots?

Definitely, and luckily it is not the most expensive tequila on the market either, so you shouldn’t need to worry about using too much of it as if you’re burning through your dollar bills.

However, tequila is best enjoyed within a cocktail or neat. Once again though, it really depends on you.

Final Thoughts

Teremana tequila is certainly unique and each of the three types has their own identity, flavor and aroma. We certainly recommend that you give this tequila a try and find out for yourself, and discover which one you prefer!
