What Does Whiskey Taste Like

When it comes to alcoholic drinks, there are plenty of options out there to choose from. However, we often get so used to drinking one specific type of alcohol that we can neglect others. In fact, some people avoid certain drinks because they think they won’t like it! Whiskey is one of these often overlooked alcoholic drinks. If you’ve never drank whiskey before, you’ll likely be wondering what it tastes like before you try it yourself.

In short, not all whiskeys taste the same. Some can taste nutty, some can taste fruity and some can taste smoky. There’s no real “one size fits all” answer to give.

However, our guide below explains a little more about whiskey tastes and how they get this way. So, if you’re looking to learn a lot more about whiskey flavors, then read on!

Whiskey Flavor Profiles

So, as we said – there’s no way to describe how every whiskey tastes. Indeed, much like other alcoholic beverages like beer, each whiskey has its own unique flavor and aroma.

However, this is a good thing. As many whiskeys are so varied, you can try and enjoy so many different whiskeys, which some people do and it becomes a hobby.

Although, while we can’t tell you that whiskey has a taste of X, we can tell you that you should expect a taste of alcohol! This is because all whiskeys have a high alcohol content.

What you will normally find is that whiskeys that come from a specific country tend to have similarities in terms of their taste and aroma. Among some of the most predominant whiskey producers, we have Scotland, Ireland, Japan, Canada and the United States.

As a result of this, anyone who is a fan of whiskey will be able to tell you that each of these countries has their own distinct similarities and indeed, differences.

Popular Whiskeys

Generally speaking, unflavored whiskey is considered the best quality. This is a very important point to note because you will find a lot of whiskeys on the market that claim to have a fruity taste or a nutty response etc.

The best whiskeys will naturally develop their flavor through the aging process in a barrel. Once again, generally speaking, the longer a whiskey is aged, the more mature the aroma and taste will be.

It’s important that we note there are different types of whiskeys on the market. There is Irish whiskey, bourbon and Scotch to name a few. Each of these has their own requirements to be called whiskey/whisky and each of them has their own natural flavor.

Let’s take a look at some of the most popular whiskeys which are considered unflavored and see how people would describe them.

Jack Daniels Bourbon

Jack Daniel’s is an American whiskey and due to how and where it was created, it is considered a bourbon. Bourbons are not aged as long as other types of whiskey, and as a result – it has a very unique taste.

Not only this, as it is an American whiskey, the base product for mash is corn – which differs from European whiskey. Bourbon has a very strong and smoky flavor, but some people do not like how powerful it is on the palate.

As a result, Jack Daniels is often mixed with soft drinks like cola. This is likely one of the reasons why Jack Daniels is a best seller around the world and the United States’ third best selling whiskey!

Jameson’s Irish Whiskey

Jameson’s is a huge favorite among whiskey drinkers and generally speaking, it is one of the best whiskeys to try if you’ve never had a whiskey before. This is because it has a much milder response on your tongue, but does not compromise on its great taste and aroma.

Much like Jack Daniels though, many people will mix Jameson with a soft drink or even water or ice to dilute some of the powerful alcohol taste.

Glenfiddich Scotch Whiskey

Glenfiddich is a Scotch whiskey and it’s a very strong drink that is not recommended for first time whiskey drinkers. However, those who have developed a taste and tolerance for whiskey will enjoy its powerful perfumey aroma and sweet taste.

Maker’s Mark Bourbon Whiskey

Maker’s Mark is a premium whiskey that debuted in the late 1950s. It’s one of the easiest types of whiskeys to drink because the flavor is described as much sweeter than others. Not only this, the aroma in your mouth does not overpower it and it is not too strong.

We mean this for both the taste/aroma and the feeling on your throat and tongue. Indeed, if you’re thinking about trying whiskey – this is a great option, but due to its premium status, you should be prepared to pay a little more money than other whiskeys!

What Is Flavored Whiskey?

Flavored whiskeys are available on the market such as peanut butter whiskey, apple whiskey, maple flavored whiskey etc.

As we mentioned earlier, these types of whiskey are not considered as “real” whiskey and their taste is far from the experience you would expect from one of the choices in our list above for example.

However, if you are taking your first steps into the world of whiskey, it could be something to think about if you are not a fan of the strong taste of alcohol. Due to the flavoring, the alcohol taste is diluted – but you can slowly start to become more used to whiskey in the future.

Final Thoughts

While there is no definitive answer for how whiskey tastes, we can tell you that you should expect the taste of alcohol! On top of this, it will depend on what type of whiskey you are going to try, where it came from and if you are mixing it with anything.
