Jefferson’s Presidential & Other Bourbon Blends, Explained

You can find blended bourbon all over the market. In fact, this category is expanding rapidly, and the quality is always increasing. Join us in celebrating the bourbon blend as we explain Jefferson’s Presidential and other blends for your sipping pleasure.

Meet Jefferson’s Presidential

The Jefferson’s Presidential Select Bourbon Whiskey comes to you from the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky. Aged 18 years, it’s a wheat-heavy bourbon with incredible flavor.

You can find Jefferson’s Presidential Select at various liquor stores on the internet. Do be forewarned, though, that you can expect to pay anywhere from $249-$6,500, depending on the age of the bourbon. When shopping, you may run across a bottle that’s anywhere from 16 to 30 years old.

Meet Jefferson’s Very Small Batch

This blended bourbon comes from Jefferson’s Bourbon. It’s a blend of their base bourbon with three hand-selected straight bourbons with various ages and mash bills. You’ll find this blended whiskey is high-quality and easy to drink. You can enjoy it neat or even in a cocktail.

When it comes to smell, you notice brown sugar with a hint of citrus. For flavor, enjoy vanilla, peaches, and toffee. The finish is delicate and warm with a bit of honey.

Meet Jefferson’s Ocean

This unique blended bourbon is aged at sea and travels on ships as it stops at ports all over the world. Why the sea? It turns out that the ocean churns the whiskey, which increases its interaction with the wood barrel.

Then, as the ship travels from weather extremes such as extreme cold and high heat, this hyper-ages the liquid differently than a traditional rickhouse. The flavor of Jefferson’s Ocean is a voyage unto itself.

Your nose will smell crÚme brûlée, sea spray, and sweet tobacco, while your taste buds will delight in the caramel, brown sugar, cinnamon, sea salt, and a bit of espresso. The long, smooth finish is a little like the classic Cracker Jacks and sea salt.

Meet Fistful of Bourbon

The tagline for this bourbon blend is “fistful” because it’s a blend of five bourbons. With over 100 years of whiskey blending experience, you can taste it in this rich bourbon.

Fistful of Bourbon balances the sweet and the spice. Released by William Grant & Sons, it’s a blended American whiskey with a Scottish heritage. You’ll notice five distinct flavors:

  • Hints of cinnamon and licorice
  • Notes of buttery
  • Hints of nutmeg and warm spice
  • Floral notes combined with a bit of the green and leafy
  • A sweet, balanced, and smooth flavor

This family has been making whiskey in Scotland for over 100 years, but for this one, they sent their superstar to the United States to find the five perfect bourbons for blending.

Meet Widow Jane 10-Year Bourbon

This distiller out of Brooklyn, New York, decided to revive the “lost art of marrying the finest whiskeys” with a signature bourbon: Widow Jane. They use rare straight bourbons and hand assemble this spirit in Brooklyn. They only use five-barrel batches, non-chill filter it, and proof it with mineral water from the legendary Rosendale Mines of New York.

The aroma says vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cream, while the taste screams orange, maple, cherry, and almond. For the finish, expect charred oak and spice. With so many awards under their belt, including Gold Outstanding for six years at Whiskies of the World and Best in Class at the World Whiskey Awards for five years, this is a definite must-try.

Meet Barrell Bourbon Batch 030

Distilled and aged in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, and Wyoming, this well-traveled bourbon has won Double Gold at the official San Francisco World Spirits Competition and Double Platinum at the Ascot Awards. Aged in a selection of barrels and bottled in Kentucky, Barrell Bourbon Batch 030 is an old-school bourbon you must sample.

This blended bourbon begins with tropical fruit forward five-year-old Indiana barrels. Also added is a group of stone fruit-forward and 10-year-old high-rye Tennessee barrels, along with a group of nutty six, nine, 11, and 15-year-old barrels.

The liquor mingles separately for one month and then gets blended together. They then add wheated bourbon from Kentucky and Wyoming for added complexity. After mingling separately for a month, they are carefully blended together. Finally, wheated bourbon from Kentucky and Wyoming is added to enhance the complexity of the blend.

You notice notes of French cider, quince, subtle herbs, florals, and even pumpkin pie, peach cobbler, and fig. The oak holds back, so you note coconut macaroon, coriander, peppermint, and baking spices. Let’s not forget its earthy side that smells of radish, butter, tahini, and damp wool.

The taste is sweet – think coffee ice cream and oatmeal raisin. You also get basil, fennel seed, and chai, as well as subtle fruit flavors like orange curacao, pawpaw, and toasted coconut. Finally, at the end, you get caramel and milk chocolate. As that fades, you’re left with molasses and fig and a hint of candied rose petal.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bourbon Blends

Wondering about blends? Here are some of your questions answered.

What is blended bourbon?

A blended bourbon must contain at least 51% straight bourbon, but distillers can also add coloring, flavoring, and even other spirits. The label must specify the age of the youngest bourbon in the bottle.

What’s the difference between bourbon and a blend?

You’ll find many types of whiskies on the market, including bourbon, which is a straight whiskey made mostly from corn, and blended whiskey, which is a mix of straight whiskey and other grain spirits. The flavors of both are similar.

What ingredients are always in bourbon?

You will always find a fermented mash of grain, yeast, and water in bourbon. This mash bill must also contain a minimum of 51% corn. Most bourbons use about 70%. Interestingly, the flavor comes from other grains like rye, wheat, and malted barley.
