Vegas & Vodka: Check Out These 7 Distilleries When You Visit Nevada

Apart from the magnificent hotels, casinos, and nightclubs, Nevada has several well-run craft distilleries producing excellent spirits. Below are the top distilleries to visit during your next visit to Nevada. Whether you like gin, vodka, bourbon, or liqueur, these distilleries have something for everyone.

1. Seven Troughs Distilling Co.

The Seven Troughs Distilling process follows similar methods George Washington implemented while running a 1799s famous distillery. The pot-still and brick-stove setup they use to make their classic Recession Proof Moonshine can only produce small batches of around 12 gallons per session, which are then bottled inside mason jars and finally labeled by hand.

Sticking to the old methods doesn’t provide a fast way of building a fortune. However, Tom Adams, the founder, says that his sole aim is to consistently produce high-quality spirits infused with the state’s traditional culture of self-reliance.

Seven Troughs sources its malt locally and buys grains from Winnemucca Farmers. They even keep the used grain in-state by donating it to Yerington hog farmers, and they send the methanol portions to a neighbor who then uses it in additives for hot rod fuel.

The distillery recently added a few spirits to its roster. These include handcrafted White Lightning, Black Rock Rum, Seven Troughs Bourbon, and Reno Rodeo Vodka. Schedule a facility tour to fully understand their processes, sample spirits, and learn about distilling history. You can even buy a barrel of bourbon and take it home to age under your supervision.

2. The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery

There is nothing that makes train travel fun and exciting like liquor. The Depot Craft Brewery Distillery recently set up shop in Reno’s previous Nevada to Oregon railway headquarters building.

To pay homage to their state routes, all the materials the Depot uses to make its products are from neighboring farms and fields. The grains are then milled, cooked, fermented, and finally distilled in their facility.

You can sample the final product at the company’s bar and restaurant. The bartenders make some unique and elaborate cocktails you won’t find anywhere else. And since the company has a brewery section (it’s the first registered distillery and brewery in Nevada), people that don’t like spirits have an alternative. So no one is left out.

Some of The Depot Craft spirits are:

  • Amer Depot
  • High Country Gin
  • Renovation Rye Whiskey
  • John C Fremont
  • The Biggest Little Bourbon

3. Frey Ranch Estate Distillery

That Frey Ranch Distillery takes alcohol production seriously would be an understatement. They grow all the ingredients in making spirits on their extensive, fertile 1200-acre farm. It’s one of the few self-reliant distilleries in Nevada.

The Frey’s have been growing and selling grains for over 150 years. After much deliberation, they set up a distillery to showcase their spirit-making skills. When you visit their premises, you can sit and taste the distilleries Ranch Vodka while viewing the source outside the enormous windows.

Frey Ranch also sells its grains to local distilleries and breweries at low rates. A factor that makes them vital to the state’s alcohol industry.

4. Verdi Local Distillery

Sitting on a measly 774 square feet of space, Verdi Local could be the smallest distillery in the country (though we are waiting to hear what our friends at Guinness World Record say about it.) Verdi looks more like an advanced lab than a distillery, and walking in it is exciting.

Married couple Katey and Jeremy Bouman, the founders of Verdi Local, set out to make flavored whisky spirits. The aim was for their drinks to be sweet and not taste like hot mouthwash. After months of research and experimentation, Verdi Local released Apple Cinnamon Whiskey, a drink that’s so delicious the area locals call it blackout juice or BOJ.

The founders are also working to produce a few more spirits, like orange peel gin and black licorice whiskey.

5. Las Vegas Distillery

In an area that’s infamously called “Sin City,” you are never far from a place serving real hard stuff. However, due to harsh laws that favor alcohol distributors, there were a few distillers in the city.

In 2011, George Racz put up Las Vegas Distillery and decided to push for change in the laws. Two years later, in 2013, he sponsored the Nevada Craft Distillery Bill, which passed and allowed other craft makers to join the action.

Currently, the Las Vegas distillery has a variety of products in its roster, like vodka, gin, bourbon, whiskey, and moonshine. It’s a perfect stop to enjoy sweet cocktails.

6. Forsaken River Spirits Co.

If you have never tasted a gin made using thirteen different local herbs, botanicals, and smoked rye, you should stop by Forsaken River Spirits Co. The distillery’s founders follow a meticulous process in making their spirits to ensure consistent quality.

For instance, the company’s famous Rye Patch Whiskey combines barley, oats, and blended rye to attain a creaminess, smoothness, and crispness. In addition, the company has a vodka they made using malted wheat to achieve a smooth texture and sweet taste.

7. 10 Torr Distilling & Brewing

10Torr is among the few distilleries on the globe that make vacuum-distilled spirits. Though unique, the method allows the artisans to bring out all the flavors in their vodkas, dry gin, coffee liqueur, and cocktails. The distillery also hosts live bands to spice up the tours.
