World Cocktail Day: A Brief History & Fun Cocktails to Mix Up

Delicious cocktails – they’re the life of the party, and they come in tons of flavors and colors. There’s literally a cocktail for everyone, even those who don’t drink alcohol! For something as versatile and crowd-pleasing, there has to be a holiday to celebrate it. In fact, cocktails have two holidays! Today, we’re going to take a look at the history of World Cocktail Day, World Cocktail Day vs National Cocktail Day, how to throw a cocktail party, and some easy cocktail recipes for world cocktail day.

Let’s dive right in, shall we?

What Is World Cocktail Day?

If you’re like us, cocktails are a delicious, fun way to express yourself – and enjoy a buzz every once in a while. But cocktails haven’t always been around. This is why, on World Cocktail Day, we (and countless other people around the world) celebrate cocktails and their incredible versatility.

When Is World Cocktail Day?

World Cocktail Day is celebrated on May 13th every year – the holiday does not move around like others we’ve discussed. In 2023, World Cocktail Day is on a Saturday, and in 2024, it will be on a Monday. 2025 will see World Cocktail Day on a Tuesday, and 2026 World Cocktail Day will be on a Wednesday. 2027’s World Cocktail Day will be on a Thursday.

Fun Fact: World Cocktail Day is also International Hummus Day and National Crouton Day! See how you can integrate these things if you throw a party!

World Cocktail Day vs National Cocktail Day

There are two days in the year dedicated to cocktails: World Cocktail Day on May 13 and National Cocktail Day on March 24. So, which one should you celebrate? The answer really only depends on your perspective. If you’re looking for a global celebration of cocktails, World Cocktail Day is the way to go.

If you’re looking for a more local celebration, then National Cocktail Day is the better choice. This day was created in 2007 by the United States Bartenders’ Guild to promote the art of mixology. It is celebrated in bars and restaurants across the country with special cocktail menus and events.

And, if you want to celebrate both, we’re on board with you. Cocktails are delicious and your sentiments are completely warranted!

What’s the History of World Cocktail Day?

World Cocktail Day was created by the Museum of the American Cocktail (MOTAC) in 2013 to commemorate the publication of the first definition of a cocktail in 1806. The MOTAC hopes that World Cocktail Day will help to raise awareness of the history and culture of cocktails, and to encourage people to enjoy delicious cocktails responsibly.

In fact, the first definition of a cocktail was published in The Balance and Columbian Repository in Hudson, New York. The definition read, “a stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters.” Cocktails have been around for centuries, but they didn’t become popular until the 19th century. In the early 1900s, cocktails became even more popular, and they have remained so ever since.

How Do I Throw a Cocktail Party?

To throw a cocktail party, you will first need to decide on a date and time. When choosing a date and time, make sure that it is convenient for your guests. You may also want to consider the weather and the time of year when planning your party.

Next, you’ll need to choose a theme; this can help you to narrow down your choices for food, drinks, and decorations. Some popular themes include black tie, masquerade, and tropical. Decorating your space can be as simple or elaborate as you like. Some popular decorations include candles, flowers, and balloons. You may also want to set up a bar and put out some snacks and appetizers.

Don’t forget to send out invitations. Be sure to include all of the important details, such as the date, time, location, and dress code. You may also want to include a map or directions to your home. Remember that digital invitations are easier, but they lack that je ne sais quoi that paper invitations have!

Finally, prepare the food, drinks, and yourself! If you are making your own cocktails, be sure to have all of the necessary ingredients on hand. You may also want to have some non-alcoholic drinks available for guests who don’t drink. We’ve included many cocktail recipes in different blogs across our website, and we’ll include some here for you, too.

Cocktail parties are a great opportunity to dress up and show off your personal style. So, get out your favorite dress or suit and put on your best jewelry. However, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy the company of your guests. So, relax, mingle, and enjoy your party!
