Why All the Rage for Mangoes on National Mango Day?

As most of us are aware, mangoes are a tropical fruit that grows in warm places like India (the top producer of mangoes in the world), southern California, and southern Florida. Mangoes are believed to have originated in southern Asia, in areas like India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. But… Why are they so popular?

#1: Mangoes Are Sweet

Like other fruits, mangoes are full of natural sugars which make them a nice treat – all while being full of fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Mangoes also have a very distinctive taste. This makes them perfect for baked goods, smoothies, and even mango cocktails!

#2: Mangoes Have a “Tropical” Vibe

Even though the USA produces some mangoes, it’s not enough for consumer demand. We still import most of our mangoes from Mexico. It might seem silly, but mangoes have that je ne sais quoi that screams “tropical” to our taste buds. This makes mangoes a fun experience, every time we eat them!

#3: Mangoes Have Global Appeal

Mangoes have an extensive global reach, with different varieties coming from various parts of the world. From Alphonso mangoes from India to Tommy Atkins from the Americas, these diverse flavors allow mango enthusiasts to explore the distinct tastes of different regions. How many of the different types have you tried?

#4: Peak Quality Around National Mango Day

Mangoes are often available only during specific times of the year, depending on the region. National Mango Day, falling during peak mango season in many places, heightens the excitement of enjoying this limited-time (at least at peak quality) treat.

Mango Cocktail #1: The Sage Lady

Usually, the sage lady cocktail features Absolut Mango Vodka. However, since we’re celebrating fresh mangoes today, we’re going to recommend that you infuse your plain vodka with fresh mango. You can do this quite easily by pouring some vodka over a cubed, peeled mango for about 24 hours. We recommend you try it – it definitely tastes different than a mango vodka you’d get at the store.

To make this cocktail, in a cocktail shaker, muddle three slices of cucumber, 1 oz simple syrup, and 2-3 sage leaves. Add 1 ½ oz of your mango vodka, ½ oz orange liqueur (like triple sec or cointreau), and 1 dash peach bitters. Fill the shaker with ice and shake until frosty.

Fine strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with a bruised sage leaf, and enjoy!

Mango Cocktail #2: The Mango Spice

This is another cocktail that calls for mango vodka but could easily be enhanced by infusing your own vodka. To make this mango cocktail, start by adding 1 oz mango nectar, 2 jalapeño slices, and ½ oz agave to your cocktail shaker; muddle well. Add 1 ½ oz mango vodka, ¾ oz lime juice, and 1 dash of orange bitters, then add ice to fill the shaker.

Shake well to chill the ingredients, then fine strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with another jalepeño slice, then enjoy.

Mango Cocktail #3: The Mango Margarita

If you’re a fan of normal margaritas, you’ll love this step-up from the classic. You’ll want to pick fresh, ripe mangoes for this recipe because there’s no added sugar in it. You won’t need it if you pick good mangoes. This recipe makes 4 servings.

First, peel and cube two large mangoes. Add the diced mango, ½ c fresh orange juice, ½ c fresh lime juice, 1 cup of tequila, and ⅓ c orange liqueur to a blender. Blend until very smooth, then rim your glasses with salt. Fill glasses with ice, then pour the margarita mix on top. Stir, then garnish with lime. Enjoy!

Mango Cocktail #4: The French Sparkle

This easy-to-make mango cocktail only takes three ingredients, plus garnishes. It’s a simple, fruity cocktail that will wow whatever guests you serve it to. Here’s how to make one:

Into your cocktail shaker, pour 1 oz raspberry vodka and 2 oz mango nectar. Shake that together with ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Top with champagne, and garnish with a mango slice and a blackberry. Enjoy!

Mango Cocktail #5: The Mango Pisco Sour

This is a mango-y twist on a traditional pisco sour, making it perfect for summertime! To make this drink, we’re just going to add one ingredient and change how it’s mixed up.

Add 2 oz pisco, 1 oz simple syrup, ¾ oz lime juice, 1 egg white, and ¼ c diced mango to a blender. Pour that mixture into a shaker with ice, shake well, then strain into an old fashioned or sour glass. Sprinkle aromatic bitters on top, then enjoy!

Mango Cocktail #6: The Flaming Scorpion Bowl

If you’re looking for something intense to share with your friends, this one’s for you. This is a delicious punch made with rum and fresh fruits, which allows the mango to truly shine!

To make yourself a scorpion bowl, you’ll first need to find a fun punch bowl to share with your friends. The bowl should have a center reservoir for a flaming presentation. The recipe makes four servings, so just keep that in mind when you go to enjoy this mango cocktail!

First, add 1 c ice, 1 c cubed pineapple, and 1 whole cubed mango to a blender. Pulse to chop and get everything started, then add 8 oz aged rum, 2 oz brandy, 3 oz orgeat syrup, 6 oz fresh orange juice, and 1 ½ oz fresh lemon juice. Blend until smooth.

Pour the blended mixture over large chunks of ice, then fill the middle reservoir with high-proof (151) rum (optional). Garnish with fresh mango and pineapple, then light the rum on fire with a long lighter (optional). Extinguish the flame before enjoying it!

How to Make the Best Mango Cocktails for National Mango Day:

Want to make the most delicious mango cocktails on National Mango Day? Here are five tips and tricks to help you out:

  1. Choose Ripe and Flavorful Mangoes: The key to a fantastic mango cocktail is using ripe and flavorful mangoes. Look for fruit with a vibrant color, a sweet aroma, and a slight give when gently squeezed. Mangoes that are too firm may lack the desired sweetness, while overripe ones might taste mushy.
  2. Experiment with Mango Varieties: Explore different mango varieties to find the flavor profile that suits your taste. Whether it’s the rich and creamy Alphonso or the honey-like Ataulfo, each type brings its unique twist to the cocktail. Don’t be afraid to mix and match to create your perfect blend.
  3. Balance the Flavors: Achieve a well-balanced cocktail by incorporating complementary flavors. Consider adding a splash of citrus-y lime juice or a hint of spiciness with chili powder or jalapeño slices. Balancing the sweetness of mangoes with contrasting elements ensures a more nuanced and enjoyable taste.
  4. Garnish Creatively: Elevate your mango cocktails with creative garnishes. A simple mango slice or mint sprig can add a touch of elegance, while a sugar or chili-salt rim on the glass rim boosts visual appeal. The garnish not only enhances the presentation but also enhances the aroma and flavor as you sip.
  5. Use Local Spirits: For an authentic and locally inspired touch, opt for local spirits in your mango cocktails. Supporting regional distilleries not only adds a unique twist to your drinks but also connects your celebration to the flavors of your area.
